インドヒュウスの骨格

鯨類は、およそ5000万年前のパキケトゥスまで遡ることができる（Thewissen et al. 2001）。初期の鯨類の化石は、北部インド・パキスタンで多く発見されている。当時、インド亜大陸はインド洋を北上中で、もう少しでアジアに到達するという時期だった。

Thewissen et al. （2007）は、鯨類が進化したと考えられているカシミール地方で生息していたインドヒュウスという偶蹄類が、鯨類の祖先に近いのではないかとの説を発表している。Geisler and Theodor (2009）は、インドヒュウスこそが鯨とカバをつなぐミッショングリンクとしている。ただし、議論は収束していない。
